The fraction has two parts- the numerator and the denominator. The number at the top is called the numerator and the number at the bottom is called the denominator.

A fraction can be written in its decimal form by dividing the numerator by the denominator.

Remember that in a division the number that is divided is called the dividend and the number that divides is called the divisor. The resulting answer is called the quotient.

Solution

Let’s divide 5 by 6. Note that since 5 cannot be divided by 6, you can add zeros (in red) to the dividend by placing a decimal point in the quotient.

5 over 6 as a decimal

Here we can see that once we place the decimal point in the quotient, we can keep adding 0 at each level to make the number divisible.
It can be seen that the division is repeating. Hence the answer is 0.83……. This is written as $$0.8\overline3$$.
