B&W Straining fontThis book is fairly comprehensive in that it includes a bit of everything. However, it does not go in depth; it's only supplementary. It's also black and white, so my child looks at it without excitement. I also have trouble with the choice of font and font size. To me, it makes the text harder on the eyes. That combined with it being entirely without color eventually leaves my eyes very tired, since they constantly have to determine where to focus without any cues. If it were in color and in better font size and type, I would keep this thoroughly comprehensive book. As it is, I plan on returning it.
It is a great book, strongly recommended! It a great book to keep learning activities during the summer break! There are so many things to exprore and learning activities are combined with working out activities. Our kid is really happy and I have already ordered not only the current grade, but the next grade to study. :)
Great summer workbookWonderful summer workbook for upcoming 3rd graders. Assignments are considerably more challenging compared to the ones provided by our school for the summer (definitely a huge plus). I love that it's broken down by weeks/days. While my son randomly picks and chooses the assignments, it's very easy to agree on the amount of work he is expected to do in a day - just one day:) Assignment of the workload used to be tricky with other book we used last year. I wish the book had the answer key in the back. I had to register in order to download it from their web site. To be fair, there are lot of perks in the website))
Very informativeMy child really likes it. This book is very informative, easy to work with and fun for this age! I bought 2 books for both kids, one is for elementary school and the second is for high school 11 grade. My old child is enjoying it as well, which is difficult for teenagers to enjoy homework and books! I really recommend those books! Thank you!
Odd reading passages.aI echo what others have said and preface this by saying our daughter reads in the 96th percentile. She blows through chapter books and loves to read. The reading passages are... odd. It feels like many of them are awkward translations into English. I'm all for stretching kids (and she's often bored with grade-level activities and asks for harder tasks), but this feels like too much of a stretch. Given that she was literally the top reader in her 2nd grade class, I think most kids would struggle with these passages. (The Math seemed to be on-point.) An example: "On the third day the Simpleton took his hatchet and went to the forest. Arriving there, he demanded his money; but the Birch-tree only creaked and creaked. "No No neighbor!" says he. "If you're always going to treat me to promises, here'll be no getting anything out of you. I don't like such joking. I'll pay you out well for it." It seems like a lot of the text used is from old folklore from around the world, but it's not at all enjoyable to read. Isn't the point to get kids to WANT to read over the Summer? I fully understand that sometimes they'll have to read / study boring, awkward and difficult text, but I was surprised by the choice of passages. How about: "And like canoes often do, the canvas shell proceeded to turn turtle." (Turn turtle?) Translation: Canoes often tip over. (My daughter could not figure that out and it took me a while to figure it out too.) Not all of the "English Concepts" passages / exercises were like this, but enough of them are that I probably won't order another book from this publisher next Summer. For the same price point, you can get color workbooks and I she gravitates to another workbook we got her that is full-color (with stickers!) over this one. We're going to keep working with her, but kids will absolutely need a parent to guide them through this workbook. (And I was looking up references because I had no idea what they meant.) My take on Summer workbooks is that they should be fun and breezy, while reinforcing concepts. Kids are already a bit checked out and the point is to keep them engaged. Many of these passages are not at all engaging for an eight year old. (Or a 42 year old.)
Great prep bookGreat book, was looking for something for my child and came across this. This was a big help, it was very detailed and straightforward. I noticed an Improvement in my child right away
